On September 19, 2017, the National Defense University (NDU) in Washington D.C. inducted five alumni into the NDU International Hall of Fame. Among the honorees was Lieutenant General Franz J. Reissner from Tulln in Lower Austria.

The University of New Orleans International Summer School in Innsbruck, Austria, celebrated the 10,000th student participating in the program this year. The summer school, one of the largest of its kind in the United States, brings some 300 faculty and students from various U.S. universities to the heart of the Alps each summer and is currently in its 42nd year.

Dr. Heinz Fischer, former Federal President of the Republic of Austria, delivered the Annual Botstiber Lecture on June 2, 2017 in the packed Atrium of the Austrian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Heinz Fischer, alongside the former U.S. Secretary of State, Dr. Madeleine Albright, spoke at the official anniversary celebration at the Marshall House in Leesburg, Virginia, as well as at a commemoration at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

On June 9, 2017, 14 fifth-grade students from Powell Bilingual Elementary School in northwest Washington, delivered their final presentation about Austria, their adopted country, at the Embassy. 

The Governor of the State of Burgenland Hans Niessl was accompanied by State Minister for Environment Astrid Eisenkopf and State Minister for Economy and Tourism Alexander Petschnig undertook an official visit to Canada and the U.S. from May 26 to June 3, 2017 in order to honor people from Burgenland and their descendants who emigrated to North America.

Hannah Lessing, Secretary General of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria, visited Washington, D.C. from June 2 to 8, 2017, and participated in a panel discussion about historic revisionism at the American Jewish Committee’s Global Forum.

On the 70th Anniversary of the Marshall Plan, Ludwig Kleinwaechter deserves to be remembered as a chief postwar Austrian diplomat whose contributions not only secured Austria’s postwar economic survival, but also its independence with his contributions to the negotiations of the State Treaty.
