The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the largest U.S. tech trade association, identified Austria as one of 13 countries earning the designation of 2018 International Innovation Champion.

After its successful launch at the end of February, the Austrian Lecture Series continued in March with several lectures and panel discussions.

On March 6, 2018, the second U.S.-Austrian Political-Military Talks were held in Washington, DC. The Austrian delegation was led by Major General Robert Brieger, Chief of Staff of the Ministry for Defense. 

The Economics Section of the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC, in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, welcomed 80 Executive MBA Students for lectures on March 15, 2018. The students from SMBS - University of Salzburg Business School were in town as part of a study abroad module at Georgetown University.

The ninth edition of the Austrian Leadership Programs (ALPS) organized by the Austrian Foreign Ministry took place in Austria from March 11-16, 2018. 28 executives and opinion leaders from around the world – including one from the U.S. – were introduced to Austria’s industrial, economic and cultural assets, with a focus on the State of Vorarlberg.

On March 20, 2018, Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner gave a lecture on the transatlantic relationship and its challenges for the European Union and the United States at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. Austria’s leading diplomat in the U.S also provided an outlook for the upcoming Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Austrian Lecture Series is a speaker and discussion series jointly organized by the Embassy of Austria, the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University's SAIS and other partners on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of U.S.-Austrian diplomatic relations, the Commemorative Year 2018 (including the centenary of the founding of the Republic of Austria), and the Austrian presidency of the European Union 2018.

From February 22 – 23, 2018,  the Austrian Consul General in L.os Angeles, Andreas Launer, visited Honolulu to reopen the Austrian Honorary Consulate there.  

This year’s winners, assessed by the Austrian Trade Commission in Los Angeles, are ESS Engineering, Hirsch, Binder+Co, AGRU, AT&S, and Doka Ventures. 

March 12, 2019 will mark the 285th anniversary (1734) of the landing of 37 protestant families in Savannah GA following their expulsion from Salzburg by Prince-Archbishop Firmian: The Salzburgers, who finally settled 25 miles upstream in New Ebenezer GA, thus constitute the oldest Austrian community on American soil.

On February 26, 2018, Christian Zeller was inaugurated as Austrian Honorary Consul in charge of the West Coast of Florida by Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner. On that occasion, the Austrian Ambassador also met with representatives of local business communities.

On February 4, 2018, Doppelmayr opened the world’s longest ropeway. With a length of 7,899.9 meters, the Hòn Thơm 3S beats the record previously held by another 3S lift in Vietnam, the Fansipan Legend, by almost one and one-half kilometers. The route of the new tricable gondola lift crosses the sea and connects the vacation islands Phú Quốc and Hòn Thơm in the south of Vietnam.

TSA – Traktionssysteme Austria – received a prestigious commission to develop and produce drive motors for Caltrain’s high-speed rail project in Silicon Valley. The trains are scheduled to run by the end of 2019 from San Francisco through Silicon Valley to San Jose, thereby connecting technology centers like Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
