In a worldwide vote organised by the “Arms Control” journal, Austria’s disarmament delegation has been awarded the accolade of "2017 Arms Control Person(s) of the Year".

On December 18, 2017, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen inaugurated Sebastian Kurz as Federal Chancellor of Austria. Karin Kneissl was appointed Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs. .

The Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota celebrates 40 years in 2017. Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner was among the congratulants at the celebrations in Minneapolis-St. Paul. He also attended the Center’s annual Kann Memorial Lecture.

On November 17, 2017, Wolfgang Reichenberger was officially inaugurated as Austrian Honorary Consul to the Bahamas by Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner. The inauguration ceremony in Nassau was attended by Brent Symonette, Bahamian Minister of Financial Services, Trade and Industry and Immigration, other dignitaries, including representatives of the diplomatic and business community.
From November 19-21, 2017, the Willard Hotel’s most prominent guests were two turkeys from Minnesota, named Wishbone and Drumstick (a.k.a. this year's Presidential Turkeys). Markus Platzer, the Austrian General Manager of the historic hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, was the first to welcome them as they checked in on Sunday. Hours before being pardoned, they received a surprise visit by Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner.
On October 7, 2017, the Austrian Research and Innovation Talk (ARIT) brought together over 130 scientists and policy makers from both the United States and Austria in Austin, Texas. The annual three-day conference, now in its 14th year, is organized by the OSTA Washington. The ARIT is the most important Austrian science & innovation gathering in North America.
From October 29 to 31, 2017, Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner visited the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul and Bloomington in Minnesota. This region along the banks of the Mississippi River has served as the cultural, commercial, educational, and healthcare center of the state in the northern Midwest of the US.
The Fourty-First Annual Conference of the German Studies Association (GSA) was held in Atlanta, GA, from October 5 - 8, 2017.
The GSA is the premier multi- and interdisciplinary association of scholars focused on German, Austrian, and Swiss history, literature, culture studies, political science, and economics. The annual conference brings together over 1,000 scholars to present the latest research in these fields; over the last three years, the Austrian Press- and Information Service has been presenting ongoing research on the Austrian image in the United States.
Ambassador Waldner visited New Orleans, LA from October 9 - 12, 2017 for a series of bilateral meetings. The ambassador met with the governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, to discuss U.S. foreign policy and Austrian - American trade relations with a focus on the Gulf South region. In addition, Ambassador Waldner met with the mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, and discussed Austrian-American relations and in particular the work of the Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies (“Center Austria”), anchored at The University of New Orleans, as well as the upcoming 300th anniversary of the City of New Orleans.
On September 22, 2017, Austria Connect North America brought together around 100 executives of Austrian subsidiaries in the U.S. and Canada. The annual one-day conference, now in its 10th year, is organized by the Austrian Trade Commission and was held at the prestigious Stanford University in California.
